🚙 Sani Pass: where the road climbs into the clouds
Linking KwaZulu-Natal’s Southern Drakensberg with the mountain kingdom of Lesotho, Sani Pass is one of Southern Africa’s most dramatic mountain routes. Its steep gravel road twists through a series of sharp hairpin bends before reaching the summit at approximately 2,876 metres above sea level.
The route began as a mountain trail used to transport people and goods between South Africa and Lesotho. By the mid-20th century, vehicles were tackling the rugged pass, helping to establish the legendary 4x4 journey known today.
